I bought the greatest hair tool today, a deep waver. It worked better on the blonde - maybe because I sprayed more heat protection spray in it?

I did their hair around 2:00 this afternoon and as of bedtime, the hair was still curly! I think I've found a winner. I did buy a "mini" version of the deep waver, I thought it would work better with their hair. I also read on some reviews that the larger ones get really heavy. I think the larger one would have been quicker, as more hair could have fit in the plate. However, the larger was twice the money and I wasn't willing to pay for something I wasn't sure would work.

In other news, the kids were playing outside this evening. #2 was acting crazy, as usual; and in an attempt to escape his older brother (who supposedly wasn't chasing him), he decided to hide in the car....well, he opened the car door on his eye and busted it right open. After sitting three hours in the ER, we came home stitched up and ready to go.
There was a nice jazz pianist at the counter service restaurant we ate at. It was nice to sit in the shade and listen to his tunes. While the boys talked to him and requested some songs, the girls and I went and stood in a 15 minute line for some princesses. We didn't know who we were going to get. Anna was hoping to see Aurora the previous 5 days, and when we turned the corner when it was our turn guess who it was. Aurora! Why this is her favorite Disney princess, I'll never know.

That evening, there were absolutely no lines for Buzz Lightyear, so we rode it about 3 times. Derek got the highest score possible and grabbed the camera to prove to everyone that he has what he takes to be a galactic space ranger.

You also know you've ridden Buzz Lightyear too much when you're more interested in posing for the picture at the end than playing the game.

It turns out that the line for the Tomorrowland Speedway finally dies down around 10:45pm. The kids kept begging to ride it and Derek and I refused to stand in line for it. As one blogger put, he would rather spend 2 hours in line at the DMV than 20 minutes in the Speedway line. I truly think that is the hottest spot in all of Disney.

We ended up finding a few more characters with very little wait time. Lucky for me, the kids didn't really care too much about meeting characters so we only met the ones with little wait time. There was one the girls wanted to meet pretty bad, and that was Rapunzel. However, when they found out they would have to stand for 1 hour (no joke) they quickly changed their minds.

Everyone told me that Rockin' Roller Coaster was the best roller coaster, and they were right. Anna was exactly the right size. Even though Molly pitched a fit about other rides, she rode it with us and ended up liking it. She even got brave enough and rode Tower of Terror. There was only one who chickened out and refused to ride it.

The absolute best time Derek and I had was at a drawing class at the animation studio. I think I missed my calling as an animator. In fact, I'm thinking of enrolling in art college and moving the family to Burbank to join the Disney staff with my mad drawing skills. Okay, not really, but it was FUN.Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18355350106968600762noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6311373740465940389.post-85346266039030743052012-05-29T17:12:00.000-04:002012-06-07T17:13:00.604-04:00More DisneyMagic Kingdom
The day finally arrived where we went to the big one - Magic Kingdom. My Dad had given each kid spending money to buy souvenirs. The little one on the far right bought Minnie ears the very first day. She rarely wore them, but she insisted on bringing them with us everywhere. That's why Nate is wearing them. And yes, and they were left behind on a ride on day 4.

We saw the evil stepmother and Cinderella's stepsisters at the back of the castle. Anna really, really wanted her picture made with them and their autograph, but they were on their way for a break.

The Fairy Godmother came out to take their place. While she happily signed Ann's book, she got on to the boys for sitting on the fence in the background and let them know that benches were for sitting on. After meeting her, I have officially decided that Fairy Godmother is my least favorite Disney character. Even lower than Stitch.
While the youngest in the family is a thrill seeker, riding everything she could, the 7 and 8 year old weren't so sure about some rides. After seeing the 52 foot plunge on Splash Mountain, they refused to get on. But being the good parents that Derek and I are, we made them. It was a mistake. As you can see on the picture they took of us, the redhead was scared to death. Some of the quotes from her during the ride - the happy part through Br'er Rabbit's world - were "Just kill me now", "Why?", "I'm going to die", etc, etc.

Everyone else loved Splash Mountain so much, that they turned around and went right back on the ride. I wasn't going to torture my girl any longer, so she and I went to meet Jessie. When we were about 5 people away, Jessie had to go inside for a few minutes to "check on Bullet". When she came back out guess who was with her! Woody! The two of them together were by far the best character interaction we experienced. As sooon as Jessie saw Molly's red hair, she stopped in her tracks and pointed at Molly's hair, then pointed to her own red yarn braid; then she kissed the top of her head a few times.
Remember me saying in a earlier post that the little one didn't like to take breaks from rides to take in a show? Well she really, really didn't like taking time to listen to animatronic presidents. Here she is in the Hall of Presidents lobby. She did end up liking it, as we all did.
Worst part about Magic Kingdom - Thunder Mountain was closed for renovations. The big crane and construction workers extending Fantasyland kind of took away some of the "magic".Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18355350106968600762noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6311373740465940389.post-2031056161019559062012-05-28T23:37:00.002-04:002012-05-31T18:19:30.971-04:00Disney World VacationSchooooool's out .... for summer. Da da da da da da da da. We left straight away for the <strike>most expensive</strike> happiest place on Earth.

I found the greatest website that gave us some useful tips, as well as a crowd calendar to tell me which park to go to on which day. Since we didn't have to wait any longer than 20 minutes for a ride anyway, I'd say Josh at EasyWDW was right on. Thanks, Josh!

Let me also say that this was our girls' first trip to Disney and the first trip that my youngest son would remember. They were beside themselves excited.

Day 1 - Animal Kingdom

Our first time at Animal Kingdom and we loved it. It might have been a bad idea to run to Expedition Everest first, purely because the girls had never been on a roller coaster before .... much less one that goes BACKWARDS! While the baby girl loved it and rode it three times, the redheaded one hated it and almost didn't want to ride anything the rest of the day.

We were lucky enough to get the first four seats of Everest, and my man snapped this picture where the track ends, due to the Yeti breaking it. You then go (pretty fast) backwards into the mountain before escaping the Yeti. I couldn't believe how much the backwards took my stomach. I happily stayed back with Red while the others went to ride it a few more times before the crowd hit.
The little one loved rides so much, that she was mad anytime we wanted to catch a show. Here we are at a really cool bird show. I included this picture not only to show her pout, but to also show one of the last times I ever wore my treasured Maui Jim sunglasses. Yes, I left them on a ride. I had them for close to a decade and I will miss them dearly.

I thought that since I'd grown up a little, that I would enjoy Epcot. Nope, still the most boring park, in my opinion. I didn't even take many pictures. Oh, and the redhead that hated all other thrill rides LOVED Mission: Space, a flight simulator that had you crash landing on Mars. Funny how all the simulator rides made me nauseous and those are the ones she loved the most.

The best part of Epcot was playing with the interactive games inside the big golf ball. Lest favorite (of mine) was Soarin'.Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18355350106968600762noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6311373740465940389.post-57336235192632185772012-05-03T15:31:00.000-04:002012-05-03T15:36:19.886-04:00Trying a Healthier Lifestyle

In an effort to eat and live healthier, we've joined a CSA. If you curious about what a CSA is or if there is one available near you, visit this site. This week I got some farm fresh eggs, beets, snap peas, lettuce, and also got to try my first ever goat's milk! The one I joined is just $15 a week, and I think that's a deal, esp since my farmer delivers to my door.

I know I said I'm trying to eat healthier, but old habits die hard. The first week of our delivery, farmer Paul walked into my kitchen with bottles of Coke on my counter. He is the kind of live off the earth kind of guy, and I felt a kind of crazy guilt having a soda in front of him. Silly, I know - as he probably didn't think anything of it. Maybe.

I also found a magazine that I love, called Clean Eating. You know some magazines that seem mostly ads and not a lot of info? This is not one of those. I've found great recipes and inspiration the issues I've bought.

When browsing through Amazon the other day, I found the Clean Eating has put out two cookbooks with great recipes from past issues. I ordered one, but haven't tried anything yet - but let me tell you the dishes look delicious. Check it out:

I've also been working out to Jillian Michaels videos. I started doing 30 Day Shred everyday for a 12 or so days, then I switched it up and added some more of hers, including Jillian Michaels: No More Trouble Zones
and

Let me tell you, she's kicking my butt. She must know what she's doing because after only 3 weeks, I've already lost 1 1/2 off my waist. A lot of reviewers complain about her yapping and rudeness, but I find that she's just what I need to whip my big butt into shape. If you're looking for a great workout at a good price, I think the 30 Day Shred is a great place to start.
I have wanted to do a mud run ever since I first heard of them, which is weird, since a) I don't like to run, b) I have no strength at all do the the obstacles, and c) I don't like to get dirty.

When the opportunity to do the Dirty Girl mud run came, I jumped at the chance. Luckily, there were some other girls in my group who didn't run so I had someone to walk with me.

Some kids in the jazz band approached their teacher a few months back and wanted to try Sing, Sing, Sing for the concert. Well, they don't make music for Sing, Sing, Sing for middle schoolers ....not even high schoolers. These kids tackled the full blown way Benny Goodman wrote it version. They did pretty darn good, if I do say so myself. Keep in mind, these are 7th and 8th grade students - and they only had 4 weeks to learn it:
Tonight's activity was the Jr. High band, in which my oldest boy plays trombone with the 8th grade and my second oldest plays trumpet with the 7th grade band. In addition to that, they are both in an extracurricular jazz band. These kids sounded so good. They talked the director into letting them play Sing, Sing, Sing - and it was AMAZING!

Here they are playing God Bless the Child, with my son playing the trombone solo. My Bloggie was out of battery, so this is recorded with the phone. You can't make out any of the kids, but at least you can hear them.
Best Daddy ever!
Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18355350106968600762noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6311373740465940389.post-77608037864874108692012-04-04T21:54:00.002-04:002012-04-04T21:54:57.420-04:00Square Skirt How To (Kind of), Otherwise Knows as a Handkerchief Skirt Semi TutorialMy daughter had a hand-me-down knit skirt that she loved, but I messed up with some laundry and it ended up with holes in it. When I lay the skirt flat, it was a square; so I thought it would be simple enough to recreate. I thought I'd share with you how I made my version; I'm calling it a semi tutorial as my instructions are probably not very clear. Also, because the skirt didn't really turn out quite right; so I guess this is more a documentation of how I made my version of a square of handkerchief skirt.

My daughter is 7 and is wearing size 7s, and these measurements were for her.
I started by cutting two rectangles out of some scrap knit, my short ends are 13 inches and the longer is 26. My next one will be bigger - you'll see at the bottom of this post how it looks on my daughter, and I think I would have liked it longer.

I folded the rectangle in half to make a square, and then I cut a quarter circle out of the corner, so that when you open up the rectangle, it will be a semi circle in the middle of the fabric, as seen below two photos below. I just eye-balled it and went in 3 inches on each side.

I then sewed my two rectangles together.

Now came the waistband. I decided I wanted to try a yoga type waistband so I wouldn't have to use elastic. I cut another rectangle 24 inches by 14 inches. I came up with this measurement by wrapping the fabric around my daughter for the length. The height was 14" because that's all of the material I had left :) I sewed a seam along the short ends making a tube.

I then folded the tube wrong sides together like so:

Considering I didn't really measure anything, I was just cutting if it looked right. Can you believe that the waist band fit the hole exactly? I couldn't! I fully expected to have to gather or stretch the skirt to fit the waist band. In fact, as I was pinning and saw it was perfect I started singing out loud, "Wonder of wonders, miracle of miracles ...."

Anyway, I sewed the band to the skirt, right sides together. Since I doubled the tube over, it finished the top

We tried it on and you can tell straight from the redhead's face .... she didn't like it at all! I told you above that I figured out the waist by wrapping the material around her middle. I really thought that with the seam allowance that it would be okay. Now I know that I should have taken an inch off so it would be snug. As they say, hindsight's 20/20; or as my dear sweet mother would say, hindsight's titty titty. To this day, I don't know what that means, I'm pretty sure it was a joke she heard.

Above is with the waist band folded down. Below is with it unfolded and she's showing how big I made it. I do believe she is sucking in her belly just to prove a point that I messed up.
I signed my man and I up for The Color Run along with our two oldest. Everyone wanted to go, but with all our kids, we just couldn't afford it. Friday night I realized that I didn't really prepare for the run; not only do I never exercise, but I also forgot to find someone to keep the other kids. So I sent child #4 in my place (who really wanted to go more than any of us).

If you don't know what The Color Run is, it's the happiest 5k on the planet - where they throw colored powder at you during the race. The only thing they ask is that you wear a white shirt.

Derek was sweet enough to take plenty of pictures since I couldn't be there myself. Well, in reality, we all could have gone and the rest of us could have been spectators - but honestly, I love my bed at 7:00 in the morning, which is when they left for Atlanta.

I think we'll have to save up money and hope that The Color Run comes back to Atlanta next year so we can all have fun!Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18355350106968600762noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6311373740465940389.post-23064634457017145802012-03-29T14:51:00.002-04:002012-03-29T14:51:41.221-04:00Esotropia/Amblyobia and Some New GlassesMy oldest has an eye condition called Esotropia. Basically, he is extremely far sighted in one eye, and his brain started preferring to use the other eye (also far sighted - just not as bad) to see. As a result, the brain would stop using the bad eye and it would turn in when he was younger, which is Amblyopia. He has been in glasses since he was four because of this, and we also had to patch the good eye to force the brain to start using the bad eye again. Those pirate days are behind us now and he now just has really poor eyesight :)

It is time for new glasses and for this first time in his life, he was able to shop from the men section! Who can believe he's turning into a man right before my eyes? As most of you with glasses know, the men's section has so many more options than the kids section. I can't wait to pick up his new pair next week, because he is going to be stylin' in high school next year!
And .... My Thoughts on Henny PennyI would normally put something like this on my Facebook status; but since I'm on an indefinite FB fast, you'll have to deal with reading about it here.

I just saw my first commercial for Skechers BOBS. As usual, I'm late finding out about things, so maybe everyone else has seen the the commercial or is wearing a pair right now. If you haven't, though, imagine a pair of TOMS.

Now, imagine that the little tag on the side said BOBS instead of TOMS, and you'd have a pair of BOBS. Seriously! I have no idea why this irked me so, since I am one of the few in this country who doesn't own a pair of TOMS. Did they have to make them look exactly the same, even with a sort of the same name?

I guess in the end, Skechers is doing a great thing, also, as they are also giving away a pair of shoes for every pair of BOBS we consumers buy. Actually, according to the Soles4Souls website, they give away two pairs of shoes for every pair you buy. The statement below was taken from the site:

BOBS by Skechers

The philosophy is simple; the potential impact is huge. Buy a pair of BOBS and SKECHERS will give 2 pairs to children in need through Soles4Souls. First donations will begin Summer 2011.

A lifestyle footwear leader and a trusted brand around the globe, SKECHERS has taken this philosophy to heart. Inspired by the good deeds of others, SKECHERS believes they can make an impact that’s unsurpassed – reaching more children worldwide than ever before.

So what do you think? Ripoff or the more the merrier?

In other totally unrelated news: my daughter checked out Henny Penny from the school library today. Can you believe that I didn't know the story of Henny Penny? I thought I knew it. I knew the famous line, "The sky is falling, I must go tell the King!" I even knew some of the characters like Turkey Lurkey and Ducky Lucky. However, I did not know that all of the other characters get eaten by Foxy Loxy and to tell you the truth, I really didn't see that one coming. So I guess in all my years, I have never read Henny Penny! Can you believe it? It's really not a good story, maybe that's why my Mother never told it to me as a child; or maybe I chose to block it out of memory. My daughter loved it though, so much that we had to read it a second time. And if I know her, we will read it another 30 times before returning it to the library next week.Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18355350106968600762noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6311373740465940389.post-62528427020268985382012-03-26T17:14:00.000-04:002012-03-26T17:14:19.243-04:00Growing UpI had my first born son just a few years ago. I'm not sure where the time went, but he turned 14 this past weekend. This week I am meeting with a counselor about his high school schedule. Yes, high school! He wanted to know if he could invite some friends over to celebrate his day; I agreed, but only his closest friends. When I was that age I had three close friends. I'm not sure if I was just not a friendly person (like I am in my old age) or if his definition of close is a bit looser than mine. He had 9 friends over to spend the night. With my kids, that was 15 wild ones staying up all night. Well, one had to go home early, so it was really only 14.

I didn't want to put a clear picture of up the other kids, not knowing if their moms would appreciate that or not. I do want to point out that the kid on the far right is the boy who fell out of our tree ... and his Mom actually let him back in my house!

It was a fun weekend, he had a great birthday, and he's already looking forward to getting his learner's license next year.Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18355350106968600762noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6311373740465940389.post-12821005598270798882012-03-25T19:11:00.002-04:002012-03-25T19:11:52.089-04:00PollenThe following pictures are for my good friend, who moved to Indiana a few years back; and who I know misses the Georgia pollen dearly.

I didn't capture the yellow sidewalks and porches and cars before our big rain over the weekend; but I did snap some photos for you afterwards, when the waters "washed" the pollen away.

You might be enjoying pollen-less days, but our azaleas and dogwoods are in full bloom down here. Be jealous.
I faced the fact that is was, indeed, really creepy when I saw a little boy at church (I am FB friends with his Mom) and when I said hi to him, he replied with, "How do you know my name?" I told him I knew his Mom. What I really thought was, boy ... I know what sheet set you sleep on and what your working on in school right now because yo mama post everything you do on FB!! Then two weeks ago I saw a stranger - well he didn't know me anyway - but I knew his name and things about him, all because of FB friends who post things about this guy. I then declared that enough is enough, life is better with a little mystery; and FB was a time sucker anyway.

Let's face it, even though I know it's strange to know everything about some people, I couldn't get enough. Just like the covers of magazines in the check out lines, I would log in to see what the latest gossip was. I would look up my kid's teachers. I would hear something about someone I didn't know and I'd look them up just to have a face with the name. Pathetic.

The first couple of days without FB were kind of hard. I was addicted to logging on, just "to see" if I had any notifications. I sat at night watching TV with the iPad in hand with nothing to do. However, after the 4th or 5th day, I realized I didn't really care anymore. Goodbye FB, goodbye drama, goodbye teenagers posting poetic lyrics to songs.

But then .... yesterday I got a sweet card in the mail with an unexpected gift. Guess what the only way I knew how to get in touch with the lady who gave it to me; yup ... Facebook. I seriously didn't have her number or her email address. So today, I caved and reactivated my account. Be proud, I went straight to her wall and wrote a thank you, then straight to my account to change my email settings. Now, I will get an email if someone friends me, messages me, or writes on my wall. I will not log on just to snoop. I will not post stupid statuses anymore. We'll see how long this lasts.Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18355350106968600762noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6311373740465940389.post-17816317651947229242012-03-21T13:30:00.001-04:002012-03-21T13:40:36.054-04:00The Book 7Through a blog post I was emailed, I found this book 7. I picked it up last night and I am loving it so far. I'm only on page 30 and already am convicted about how much I waste. I won't bore you with a description, if your interested you can click on the link to read more. But I did want to share it with you, because I have a feeling I'm going to love this book and it might just be a life changer.
I happened to look up Field of Dreams on IMDB the other day, and Field of Dreams 2 popped up on the auto-finisher. I scoffed and couldn't believe they would even try to make a second one. Then I realized it was just a short and a spoof - and a funny one at that. Check it out.Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18355350106968600762noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6311373740465940389.post-79461148519380487172012-03-14T17:21:00.000-04:002012-03-15T14:13:14.612-04:00I'm Older

I know this isn't a good picture, but I wanted you to see what laziness looks like. Do you see how my boys put patio chairs on a see saw? I guess it's just too hard to sit up straight for too long.

It's also been a crazy mild winter. The azaleas are already in bloom, the AC has had to be turned on upstairs, and the younger ones have been begging to go swimming. While it's not quite warm enough for a pool, Derek did concede to let them wash his motorcycle and get a little wet.
In other news, I turned 36 a few weeks ago. It was probably the best birthday I've had in at least a year. I had a facial, a massage, a steak dinner cooked by my wonderful Mother, my favorite cake - a pound cake, and a date with my man to Avenue Q. However, two days later, I found a long hair on my chin and it all went to pot. This getting older is for the birds.Amyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18355350106968600762noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6311373740465940389.post-28328924256635706152012-03-13T12:25:00.001-04:002012-03-13T12:25:35.640-04:00Bye Bye Puppies

It was time to give the puppies away this past weekend. Ole Blue Eyes (pictured below) was such a beautiful boy that I just knew he'd be the first to go. Can you believe he was the last to be picked? Even the runt with a bad back leg was chosen before him!

It only took an hour and a half to give them away sitting in the Wal-Mart parking lot. If that's all it takes, then why get Tippy fixed? I think we should just let her have a few more litters because it's so much fun. No, I guess we'll make Bob Barker proud and do the right thing by controlling the pet population.
On our way home from our little two day getaway, we stopped by Anna Ruby Falls in Helen, GA. It was a nice, enjoyable little stroll along Smith Creek that ended at a double waterfall, which according to the books and websites is rare.

It was only .4 mile to the falls, but you could keep going on another trail if you wanted, which the kids tried to talk us into. It's "only 5 miles". Their young bodies can't comprehend the pain "only 5 miles" would cause me .... and also none of them seemed to notice the 10 miles round trip section of the sign. Good thing that I read things all the way through.

It was worth the stop to Anna Ruby Falls. The weather was perfect and the scenery was beautiful. If you're ever near Helen, I highly recommend going. It did cost money, but only $2 per person over 12. We took a little trip to Amicalola Falls over the weekend and had a great time just getting away. On Friday, we went out for a "small" morning hike to see the falls. Little did I know that really the only way to see the falls good was to go on the trail with steps. Lots of steps. 604 steps. We started at the top, since going down 604 steps sounded easier to me than going up them.

Once we made it to the bottom of the 1 mile trail, my son found a map that showed several other ways to the top. Since I wasn't too keen on climbing back up those stairs, I was willing to let him navigate. I wish I had paid better attention to the map myself, or maybe listened to my son a little better, because the 1.5 mile hike through the woods up the mountain took us back to ..... the bottom of the 604 steps. Lucky for me, the trail met up with a parking lot next the road before it met the stairs. A lady happened to be there when I came huffing out of the woods and felt sorry for me, so she drove me up the rest of the mountain to our van.

After eating a nice lunch and getting my energy back, my sister, Kim, and her family drove up to visit us. Can you guess what we did together? That stupid trail next to the falls. Since Kim doesn't do going down stairs well (she takes them like a toddler, where both feet have to meet together on each step .... I don't blame her, she took a pretty nasty fall down some stairs several years ago that ended in a pretty bad break complete with rod and screws in her leg) I decided to go up the trail with her from the bottom. I ended up climbing those 604 steps after all. You wouldn't believe the soreness I experienced the next two days after all that hiking and all those stairs.
